Why not use a Car Conversion Kit ?

We are often asked why we don't use a standard Car Conversion kit on a boat (after all, they are often cheaper).

The price quoted is cheaper for a reason. For example:

  • Smaller fuel tanks may be specified. At least one firm's price is complete with a 80lit tank. We don't even offer one that small for a reason - a typical 5.7lit engine at fast cruising speed probably uses around 80lit/hr. You do the sums on how far a 80lit tank will take you!
  • Lack of Performance. A typical car engine is under 2lit and spends much of its time running at half throttle (or less); a typical boat engine is 5lit or more and spends much of its time running 3/4 throttle (or more). This requires considerably more fuel flow. Small vaporisers and small bore gas pipes cost less but will seriously degrade performance.

  • Incorrect fuel filler. Marine installations use a different fuel filler unit to that fitted on road vehicles. Not a problem with a small boat on a trailer but try getting your 35ft motor cruiser onto the Garage forecourt!!

  • Control system. All HambleMEGS installations are fitted with a sophisticated electronic control system that automatically switches off the fuel supply if the engine stalls or if any of the sensors detect a gas leak.

  • Safety and Reliability.  All our Accredited Marine Engine Gas Installers have undertaken a rigorous training course before carrying out any marine installations and all their work complies with the relevant clauses of the "Code of Practice 18" issued by the L P Gas Association.
